How to Rock the Life You Want (Spoiler: Be YOU)

As a musician who became a coach, I regularly ask my clients this jammin’ question, “so, are you ready to rock life?”

If your answer to my question is yes, then this classic Zappa quote may aid you. It touts in its fun way the fact of the uniqueness of each of us. And those who know about Frank will tell you that he was a man who walked his talk.

As a musician/composer and provocateur during the Vietnam era and beyond, Zappa created his own rock life legacy of compelling, original music and acerbic social commentary. From genre-busting musical styles and types of ensembles, lyrics that took down sacred cows, and a lifestyle that was part of his art, he lived his truth. His own unrepeatable creative life.

Enter… you.

Enter this season of opportunity in your beautiful life.

Are you considering stepping off the beaten path? Marching to the beat of your own drummer?

I’m having fun with cliches here to reinforce the truth that the question of whether and how to live in a way that’s unique you is oh, so human. And yet…

Are you a leader? (You are. And this tool will help.)

Ah, leadership.

It may seem like a bit of a cliché these days, bandied about as the cure-all or missing piece in any and all situations. Or maybe it’s only applicable in those all-window corner offices in the commercials we see of executives in skyscrapers. But let’s get down into it. Because the fact is, these days we’re actually all leaders of our own individual “little bandwagons,” trekking across the frontiers of 21st century life.

We know that life is truly what we make of it these days. There are so many possibilities, and so few certainties. The old “company man for 40 years” game that our fathers or grandfathers played over the very long haul is, in fact, over. Our lives can and do change profoundly decade by decade, if not more often. Yes, we’d all be wise to consider ourselves leaders in our own game of life that we’re playing in collaboration—or at least in tandem—with others.

So, in your personal or professional life, are you a water-cooler prophet? The kind others want to hang out with and hear from? If so, are you busy inspiring them on a regular basis to be their best selves, toward what they want most, while modeling that in your own approach?

Get down to the DOING for YOU… today!

You’re no doubt busy. Modern life is action-packed.

But let’s face it, there’s “busy” doing, well, not much.

There’s “busy” jumping through hoops that mean little to you.

There’s “busy” putting out fires because you’re in the habit of emergency mode.

Then there’s the real deal brick-and-trowel stuff, the paint the wall stuff, the busy-ness of working away incrementally at your own dearly-held plans, dreams, and goals.

Building the life that you want.

It’s a very different scenario that, over time, creates very different lives.

Because remember:

You can’t think and dream your way to that which you want most. As in, someday there’ll (magically) be time. Next week. Next weekend. Next month. Next year.

Gotta act. Move forward. Get real! Get down to the doing.

If there are big differences between your most important goals and this week’s to-do list, take a little time to ask yourself—and the people who are in your corner—what’s really up with that?

And FYI, professional coaching gets you to the core of that question and its answers, interrupts patterns as needed, and supports you in creating new ones that serve your goals.

Once you’re clear on what those big discrepancies are about and how to transcend them, you can go about the busy-ness—the good kind—of creating those new patterns. List, tackle, and check off the stuff that will satisfy you the most.

And don’t let the mythic 21-day approach to forming new habits get you down if it doesn’t work for you. Here’s a timely piece from BrainPickings on why it may take longer to get into your goal-centric groove. Whatever inspires you as an approach, well, do that. Just do it.

What’s the old adage about how to eat an elephant?

Time. (Check!)

And if the most important stuff starts making the list but still doesn’t get done, because, after all, it’s optional, rather than required by somebody or something outside you, well, take a look at that. Time to truly re-prioritize your life. Re-interrupt as needed, day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute, whatever habitually blocks your flow.

Just do it. Right?! :)

Because it’s up to you, my dear, you who want and deserve what you want.

You the designer, the artist, the bricklayer, creating your beautiful life, stroke by stroke. Brick by brick. Bite by bite.

So write it all down. The good stuff that wants to happen. Step by step, on top of your to-do list instead of on the bottom or in the margins.

In BOLD CAPITAL LETTERS if that’s what it takes.

Then get busy. The best kind of busy.

And reach out to get me on your team! It’ll be my pleasure as I act on my own beautiful goals and dreams.
